Message Plastic pieces they can be used for the same reason on cast components. If the components are shelled or thin walled, ribs are added to strengthen the pieces and stop warpping from happening. I highly doubt they were used as heat sink application here since there isn't much surface area and the number of the ribs here. You would need a good concentration of fins for a good heat sink.
